Boys: Railroaders move into first place
Sparks entered Friday’s pivotal 3A North matchup at North Tahoe tied with the Vikings for first place. It left alone atop the standings.
The Railroaders handed the Vikings their first league loss of the season, 2-0.
With the win, Sparks (18-2-1, 11-2-1) moved three points clear of North Tahoe (10-3-5, 9-1-4) with just two regular-season matches remaining.
The Railroaders scored on each side of the half.
They will look to hang onto first place on Tuesday at home against Incline (11-4-4, 7-3-4) and Thursday at Lowry (1-14-0, 1-12-0).
Spanish Springs handles Reno
The Cougars clinched the league title on Wednesday, but that didn’t stop them from cruising on Friday at Reno.
Spanish Springs (12-2-1) rolled over the Huskies (7-6-2), 5-2.
Court Diesner and Austin Fullmer both found the net twice. Cristian Camacho scored the other goal on a penalty kick.
The Cougars complete their final postseason tune up on Monday night at Reed.
Girls: Slide continues for Sparks
The Railroaders’ losing streak reached five on Friday with a 5-1 home loss to North Tahoe.
The defeat dropped Sparks (6-11-3, 3-9-2) to eighth place in the 3A North, but just three points back of the fifth and final playoff spot. North Tahoe improved to 9-7-2, 7-5-2.
The Railroaders are down to two games to try to hurdle three teams and get in the postseason for the second straight year. Both will be at home.
They host Incline (4-7-2, 4-7-2) on Tuesday and Lowry (4-8-3, 4-8-3) on Thursday. Both teams are in front of Sparks in the standings.
