Top Issues to Vote on in Washoe County:
Your sample ballot lists those running for office and certain measures. Along with voting for Sparks City Council candidates in Wards 1, 3, and 5; State Senate District 13; State Assembly District 31; and Sparks Justice of the Peace Department 3; voters will have the chance to vote on top issues affecting the state of Nevada. Here is what you’ll find on the ballot:
Measure 1, Background Checks on the Selling and Distribution of Firearms- This question is basically asked on whether you believe that the Nevada statute should be amended to prohibit a person from selling or transferring a firearm to another person without a background check performed by a federally-licensed dealer on the potential buyer.
Measure 2, Allowing Those 21 and Older Possess and Consume Marijuana- Although medical marijuana dispensaries are currently legal in Nevada, if this measure is passed then it would open it up for anyone 21 and older to be able to legally cultivate, possess and consume a certain amount of marijuana. This measure would also impose a 15 percent excise tax on wholesale purchases of marijuana.
Measure 3, Establishing a Competitive Retail Electric Energy Market- Maybe this came up because Tesla is coming into town, but this question asks if you believe a law should be established to allow an open, competitive electric energy market that prohibits monopolies and exclusive franchises for generating electricity.
Measure 4, Tax Exemption for Medical, Oxygen Delivery, and Mobility Enhancing Equipment- Not talked about that much in the news, this measure asks if you think the law should be amended to exempt tax on medical, oxygen delivery, and mobility enhancing equipment prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider on the sale, storage, use, or consumption of personal property.
Washoe County Question 1, Impose a 0.54 percent Sales Tax to Fund School District Capital Projects- This Washoe County initiative asks if you support this half-a-penny sales tax increase to fund Washoe County School District capital projects for acquisition, construction, repair and renovation of school facilities.
