Cougs sneak past Mustangs for second time in 24 hours
Neither win was convincing, but Spanish Springs completed the regular-season sweep of Damonte Ranch on Tuesday afternoon with a 5-2 home victory.
The win came 24 hours after the Cougs (11-4, 7-3) scored three times in the top of the seventh to steal a 4-1 road win over Mustangs (7-11, 4-6).
Jordan Santos worked around nine hits, allowing just two runs over 5.1 innings to pick up the win on the bump. He struck out four and did not walk a batter.
Santos left after surrendering a one-out pinch-hit RBI double to Nate Guidara in the sixth. Colton Forman got the next two batters to end the threat.
Sophomore Connor Culp came on in the top of the seventh with one out and the tying run at the plate. He needed just one pitch to induce a game-ending double play on lineout to short and was awarded the save.
Marlin Brucato (2-for-4, two doubles, two runs), Josh Prizina (2-for-2, run) and Forman (2-for-2, double) all had multi-hit afternoons in the win.
Brucato led off the fifth with his first two bagger of the afternoon and came around to score on a Tanner Smith RBI groundout to first, giving the home squad a 4-1 lead. The senior second baseman put the Cougs up 1-0 in the third when he reached on an error and eventually scored on a balk.
Spanish Springs will attempt to win its third straight on Thursday afternoon at Bishop Manogue (8-9, 6-4).
Raiders’ skid reaches seven games
Baseball can be a turbulent sport.
For some stretches, the waves break in your favor. In others, not so much.
First-year Reed coach Levi Matherly is more familiar with the latter than he prefers.
His club’s losing streak reached seven games on Tuesday afternoon with a 11-3 home loss to Wooster. The defeat came three days after a 5-4 nine-inning walk-off loss at Wooster.
Reed dipped to 6-13, 3-7 in the 4A North. Wooster progressed to 10-9, 5-5.
The Raiders held a 3-2 edge going to the top of the fifth when the Colts scored four runs and added five more tallies in the top of the sixth to break the game open. An error with two outs in the fifth allowed the final two Wooster runs of the inning to score.
The wheels, already barely hanging on, fell off in the sixth. A leadoff infield single preceded two-straight errors then a bases-loaded hit by pitch.
Kameron Soubiea (2-for-2, double) provided the Raiders’ only extra base hit – a leadoff double in the bottom of the second. His pinch runner came around to score two batters later on a Ryan Murphy RBI single, giving the home team a fleeting 3-2 lead.
It doesn’t get any easier for the Raiders on Thursday, when they travel to Galena (10-8, 8-2).

It was Zac Whitely not Keith Turnipseed who hit the home run for Wooster. Also, you left out Douglas in your twitter standings…..

I do not have the manpower to confirm every stat, so more times than not I have to go off the information that is given to me. Regarding the standings, I sent out a corrected tweet with Douglas included 45 minutes later. Thank you for you input.
