Raiders complete sweep of Grizzlies
Reed wrapped up an unlikely regular-season sweep of Galena on Saturday afternoon with a dominating five-inning 10-0 home win over the Grizzlies.
The victory came two days after the Raiders (8-14, 5-7) erased a three-run deficit to steal a 6-4 win at Galena, ending a seven-game losing streak. The Grizzlies dropped to 11-10, 8-4.
Jett Brook shut down one of the most prolific offenses in the 4A North, throwing a five-inning one hitter. He struck out one and walked two.
“Jett Brook did a great job challenging their hitters today,” first-year Reed coach Levi Matherly said. “They have a strong offensive lineup, and to hold them to one hit is a tough challenge. We needed a good outing from him and he delivered.”
The Raiders smacked 13 hits in the win, led by designated hitter Miah Harmon (3-for-3, three runs) and second baseman Ryan Murphy (3-for-3, two RBIs, run).
Right fielder Jon Pinto provided Reed’s lone extra base hit, a two-run triple in the bottom of the fourth that put the home team up 7-0.
“Offensively, we did a good job of being aggressive at the plate and putting them in tough situations,” Matherly said. “And we were able to get some timely hitting with runners in scoring position.”
The Raiders also stole five basses.
Reed will try to win its third straight on Tuesday afternoon when it plays North Valleys at Greater Nevada Field. First pitch is at 4 p.m.
Miller pitches Cougs over Miners
Spanish Springs remained in a tie atop the 4A North on Saturday with a 5-1 home win over Bishop Manogue.
The Cougars (13-4, 9-3) kept pace with Reno by completing the regular-season sweep of the Miners (8-11, 6-6) and winning their fourth straight.
UNLV commit Casey Miller dominated for five innings and picked up the win. Miller allowed just two hits and struck out eight over five scoreless without surrendering a walk.
Colton Forman recorded the final four outs to earn the save.
He entered with runners on first and second and two outs in the top of the sixth as the Cougs clung to a 3-1 lead. He induced an inning-ending flyout to center and the Cougs tacked on two insurance rallies in the home half.
Tristan Hussey led off the bottom of the sixth with a pinch-hit triple and wasn’t there long. He scored one batter latter on Culp’s RBI single. Dawson Martin capped the scoring when he plated Marlin Brucato, who reached on an error, with the second run-scoring single of the inning.
Culp finished 3-for-4 with a double, RBI and run scored. Martin went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs driven in.
Spanish Springs goes on the road Tuesday afternoon to play at McQueen.
