In her latest exit from the woods, Hillary Clinton came up with two dozen reasons why she lost the Presidential Election. Strangely enough, she left out the twenty-fifth reason, which is actually number one–herself.
All Hillary has to do is obtain a copy of the new book, “Shattered” to find out what happened in her campaign. There was complete disarray from the onset, apparently, when it took some ten writers to craft her announcement speech. Having written a number of political speeches, I know from experience that it is almost impossible for more than two speech writers to be on the same page. Hence when Hillary herself got into the mix of that first speech it was a portentous moment of how the entire campaign would go.
In Hillaryworld there were two distinct camps. One was made up of her close personal coterie, which included Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills. The other was comprised of savvy politicos such as John Podesta. When the two camps clashed, Hillary would always back the position of her intimates. Her stance would then inflame the Pros who knew that, as per usual, when Hillary made a decision it was usually the wrong one.
A prime example of Hillary “misspeak” occurred recently when she gave the Commencement address to her Alma Mater, Wellesley College when she spoke of an “all-out assault on truth”, mind control and “alternative facts”– and even dropped the word “impeachment”. One would almost think she was referring to the Obama Administration, which was guilty of all of the above. Instead she was attempting to besmirch Trump. Also, in her look back at history during her speech, she stated that back in 1969 a President (Nixon) had eventually been impeached. Even the mainstream media pounced on this assertion because they accurately reported that Nixon had resigned and was never impeached. Perhaps in her mind she confused Nixon with her husband Bill, who was impeached.
The fact that Hillary could never connect with the average person was amply illustrated during her campaign when she waddled imperiously behind a rope line which prevented the Press and the hoi polloi from approaching her.
While Hillary’s “makeovers” are approaching double digits, her latest foray into public life has been overshadowed by the announcement that old warhorse, Joe Biden, is emerging on to the scene once more.
Printed on the dustcover of “Shattered” is a pertinent paragraph which sums up the content of the 400-page book. It goes, “It was never supposed to be this close. And of course, she was supposed to win. How Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 election to Donald Trump is the tragic story of a sure thing gone off the rails. For every James Comey revelation or hindsight acknowledgement about the electorate, no explanation of defeat can begin with anything other than the core problem of Clinton’s campaign—the candidate herself.” The revealing book was written by Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, both veteran reporters on the Washington scene.
