In a showdown of first place teams in the High Desert League, Reno defeated Spanish Springs 35-7 Thursday night to move into the top spot in the division entering the final week of the regular season.
The Cougs hung with the undefeated Huskies in the scoreless first, but Reno all but put the game away by halftime after taking a 28-0 lead. Both teams traded touchdowns in the third and Reno cruised to a win that locked up the top seed for them in the playoffs next week.
The lone offensive bright spot for Spanish Springs was a touchdown reception by junior Colby Melton who caught five balls for 35 yards. The Cougar rushing attack was held in check all night as the team combined for just 24 carries for and a total of 111 yards.
Spanish Springs now hosts an important game Friday night against Reed that will determine playoff seeding. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
