The 4A Northern football playoff brackets are now set for the final weekend of regular season games that saw Reed dismantle Spanish Springs 49-7 on the Cougars home field Friday night.
The game was a battle for second place in the High Desert League, and the Raiders claimed that spot and earned the second seed in the regional playoffs that begin tomorrow. Spanish Springs finished in third place with the third seed.
Reed raced out an early lead in the matchup of rival teams and took a 21-7 lead into the half. The defense that has been strong all year held the Cougars scoreless in the second half, highlighted by a pair of interceptions of Tristan Szabo by Chase Merrill. The Raiders also got to the freshman quarterback all night and recorded five sacks, including two by Randy Nemedez.
Senior quarterback Cameron Emerson had another solid game with two touchdowns on 152 yards through the air and Reed’s rushing attack accounted for five scores. George Moreno accounted for two of those scores on just four touches and 110 yards.
With the regular season in the rearview mirror, the teams now turn their attention to the postseason. Reed (8-2, 4-1) is set to take on Galena (5-4, 2-2) who finished third in the Sierra League standings tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at home. The Grizzlies have lost two of their last three games and are coming off a 47-22 homes loss to Damonte Ranch.
On the other side of the bracket, Spanish Springs (5-5, 3-2) will battle Bishop Manogue (7-3, 3-1) Thursday night at 7 p.m. The Miners had won four straight before falling 42-21 at Damonte Ranch on Oct. 26.
The winners of those games will play Nov. 17 at sites to be determined.
