The impressive season continued for the Sparks boys soccer team last week when they won three games in three days to win the regional tournament at Lowry High School in Winnemucca and advance to state.
The Railroaders started the tourney by knocking off a familiar opponent in Elko, 3-1. It was the third time this season that Sparks has beaten the Indians.
But it was Friday’s game against North Tahoe that changed the entire week. North Tahoe crushed Dayton 11-0 the day before and entered its game with Sparks having already defeated them twice in the regular season. None of those stats mattered, however, as the Railroaders earned a hard-fought 2-1 win and moved onto the regional title game, where they beat Truckee 2-1.
The win gave Sparks the top seed from the North in the state tournament that begins Friday in the backyard of the Railroaders. They will take on Southeast Career Tech from Las Vegas at 4 p.m. at Spanish Springs High School. On the other side, Truckee will battle the top seed from the South, Sunrise Mountain earlier in the day at noon.
The winners of the two games will face off Saturday in the state championship game at 12 p.m. at Spanish Springs.
