It was a busy week for the Sparks High School boys basketball team, but unfortunately for the Railroaders, the results were all the same.
The team played three games in five days, beginning with a trip to Susanville last Tuesday to take on Lassen where they fell 69-34. The Railroaders went on to host a pair of weekend games, and lost 78-38 to Lowry Friday night and 73-36 to Fernley on Saturday.
Sparks (0-6, 0-3) will look to get into the win column for the first time this season on Saturday when they welcome Dayton at 2:30 p.m.
Reed
After finishing 2-2 in the McDonald’s Classic in Stockton, Calif., the Raiders returned to Northern Nevada and picked up its first conference win of the season last Tuesday at Carson High, 54-52.
It was a tight contest throughout the game, and Reed led 25-24 at halftime. The Raiders stretched the lead to four points heading into the fourth quarter and were able to hold off a late rally by Carson. Trey Stevens connected behind the arc late in the fourth quarter and sank a pair of free throws to secure the win.
Reed was back on the road Friday night at Douglas High and knocked off the Tigers 76-47.
The Raiders (4-7, 1-2) host Wooster on Thursday and Galena on Friday, both at 7 p.m., before getting a week off for the holiday break.
Spanish Springs
The surging Spanish Springs boys basketball team won two more conference games last week and now sit atop the High Desert League standings at 4-0 in league play.
Jalen Townsell continued to torch opposing teams and scored 30 points and grabbed six rebounds in am 86-53 blowout of Douglas last Tuesday. Nate Miller connected on four 3-pointers for 16 points in the win and Cordell Stinson added 15 and six boards.
Townsell was at it again on Friday, scoring a team-high 17 points in a 68-62 win at Galena that saw four Cougs reach double-digits in the scoring column. Leo Grass scored 15 in the win, while DJ Panfili added 14 and Mason Whittaker 12.
The Cougs (8-2, 4-0) host a pair of conference games this week when they take on Damonte Ranch at 7 p.m. tomorrow and Bishop Manogue Friday at the same time.
Excel Christian
Excel’s Jesse Bain hit three 3-point field goals and scored a team-high 13 points, but it wasn’t enough as his team fell to Virginia City 55-40 at home on Saturday.
After a low scoring first quarter by both squads, the Muckers scored 20 in the second to take a 27-15 lead into the half. The Warriors nearly matched Virginia City’s point total in the second half and were only outscored by three.
Excel (2-4, 0-1) hosted Sage Ridge on Monday and played at Mineral County on Tuesday in a pair of league games. They will welcome Smith Valley to town on Friday night at 7 p.m. before taking two weeks off for holiday break.
