Spanish Springs
The first-place Cougars continued their scorching play before Christmas and won two more conference games to move to 6-0 in league play.
Jalen Townsell scored 30 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead his Cougs to a 68-59 home win over Damonte Ranch last Thursday. DJ Panfili and Leo Grass each added 11 points in the win and Cordell Stinson pulled down 10 boards.
Townsell was back at it the next day with another double-double, 25 points and 10 rebounds, as Spanish Springs beat Bishop Manogue, 53-42. Panfili was second in team scoring with 13.
The Cougars (10-2, 6-0) are set to play four games this week beginning today at the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines tournament in California.
Reed
After starting the season 1-7, the Reed High boys basketball team has quickly turned its season around and have won five straight games. The latest in the streak for the Raiders are a pair of victories before the Christmas break, a 67-43 win over Wooster last Thursday and a 73-70 win against Galena on Friday.
After handling the Colts, Reed was in a battle with the Grizzlies and found themselves down by 12 in the first quarter. However, the Raiders were able to chip away and battled to 33-31 deficit at half before outscoring Galena by four in the second half to come away with the win.
Up next, Reed (6-7, 1-2) will play Bella Vista out of California on Friday at 2 p.m. as part of the Rail City Classic.
Sparks
The struggles continued for the Sparks High boys basketball team last week. The Railroaders, who came into the game winless on the season, fell to Dayton 71-42 in their only game of the week.
Sparks will look to get into the win column this week when they play four games in four days, starting today with Sierra Lutheran at 9:30 a.m. in the Rail City Classic.
