Spanish Springs
It was a big night for the Spanish Springs High girls basketball program Friday night as they went on the road and defeated Reno 52-50 to give the team its first win over the Huskies in school history.
With the game tied at 50, Cougars sophomore Autumn Wadsworth drove to the hoop and scored the game-winning layup with just seconds left on the clock to complete the comeback. The Cougs trailed by 11 in the third quarter before going on a 24-11 run to win the game.
Wadsworth finished with a team-high 20 points while Kierra Johnson added 15.
The win also shook up the High Desert League standings with less than a month to play in the regular season. The Huskies fell to 7-1 in league play and dropped to second place behind McQueen who sit at 4-0 in the conference. Spanish Springs is in third place with a record of 14-6, 3-1 and Reed is right behind in fourth at 3-2.
The girls picked up their second conference win of the season earlier on the week on Tuesday when they beat Hug 65-14. They played at Sparks rival Reed yesterday and will host McQueen on Friday night.
Reed
The Reed High girls earned a split last week after falling to McQueen at home last Tuesday 51-42 before getting by Hug on the road 64-36.
Vanessa Hernandez led the way in the scoring column against the Lancers with 14 points and Serene Townsell-Williams finished with 10.
After their showdown with the Cougs yesterday, the Raiders (14-3, 3-2) will host North Valleys on Friday night.
Sparks
Sparks outscored Dayton 15-7 in the fourth quarter Saturday on the road and held off the Dust Devils to earn a 41-31 win. The girls split the week after falling on Tuesday at home to Truckee 63-21.
The Railroaders sit at 3-7 in the 3A Northern League and will play at Lowry on Friday and at Fernley Saturday.
Excel Christian
Emily Barrera scored 18 points and Maddie Briggs had eight as the Excel Christian girls basketball team picked up its second win of the year on Friday, 38-17 over Sierra Sage Academy.
The girls play two more games this week after traveling to Virginia City yesterday. They hit the road at Smith Valley on Friday and host Mineral County Saturday.
