The Reno Aces bounced back from a tough week with a 4-3 record from June 25 to July 1. Reno played host to Salt Lake last week and ran off three straight wins over the Bees after losing 9-6 on Monday. They went on to outscore Salt Lake 36-7 during those wins before dropping two of three at Tacoma.
The big offensive numbers were helped out by the hot bat of Aces third baseman Kevin Cron. Cron was named the Pacific Coast League Player of the Week for the period of June 25-July 1. He went on a tear last week, going 12-for-26 (.461) in six games with 15 RBIs, five home runs, four multi-hit games and two multi-home run games. The D-backs’ No. 19 prospect went yard twice and drove in six runs to lead Triple-A Reno to a 14-8 victory over Tacoma on Saturday at Cheney Stadium.
Cron is having an MVP-caliber season with the Aces. The TCU product has 13 homers and 54 RBIs, despite missing more than a month because of a strained left oblique. He put up a .316/.376/.600 slash line with eight homers and 30 RBIs in June and been even better over his last 10 games going 17-for-38 (.447) with nine runs scored, five home runs and 19 RBIs. His 30 RBI in June lead the Aces and the entire Pacific Coast League in June. He is the first Aces player in franchise history to have multiple games of six or more RBIs in a single season. He leads all of professional baseball in RBIs since his first game on May 4.
Reno returns home tonight and will host Sacramento for five games in the final series before the All Star Break. The club is currently sitting in third place in the PCL Pacific Northern Divsion at 38-45. Fresno is in first with a record of 48-34 and Tacoma is five and a half back at 43-40.
