Three players made their pro debut for Reno 1868 FC Saturday as the club fell 4-2 in a hard-fought match against Morelia Monarcas.
Reno’s 16-game unbeaten streak was ended as a result of the loss.
In a match that was delayed for two hours due to lightning, Reno fared far better than its previous Liga MX meeting with Atlas FC, netting its first two goals against a top-division North American club.
Reno would strike second in Saturday’s clash as forward Brian Brown continued his fantastic form tying the match at 1-1 off a nifty Lindo Mfeka assist in the 30th minute.
Despite going down 3-1 into halftime, Reno’s attack remained relentless as usual as forward Mo Thiaw brought Reno within one goal in the 59th minute making the score 3-2 following a scramble in the box.
Morelia would end up scoring one more in the 76th minute via a Sebastián Vegas tip-in to put the match away. But all was not loss Saturday night.
Three young players: Ivan Valencia, Jacob Akanyirige and Gilbert Fuentes all made their professional debut.
Fuentes and Akanyirige, both 16 years old, became the youngest players to suit up for Reno 1868 FC. All three players were developed in the San Jose Earthquakes Academy.
Reno won its fifth straight game and had extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games last Wednesday with a 4-1 victory over LA Galaxy II.
Reno will get a week off before returning to action July 28 against Saint Louis FC.
Kickoff for that home match at Greater Nevada Field is slated for 7:15 p.m.
