All of the countdowns, all of the speculation, all the anticipation, it’s done. It’s here.
High school squads all across the Silver State have been enduring the heat, and themselves, for most of the month and for the first time in almost three weeks, they get to hit someone wearing a different-colored uniform. Weekends will now consist of pigskin starting Friday night.
It’s refreshing, isn’t it?
This is the most exciting part of the year for a lot of people—football fans in particular. The temperature gradually decreases from blistering in late August to comforting in September and October. The familiarity of a routine sets in. And some of us make the semi-permanent move to the couch on Saturday and Sunday afternoons to the chagrin of our social lives.
But that’s what makes this time of year so fun. Not matter the struggles of the midweek, we know what looms on the weekend. Friday night lights. Marching bands playing school fight songs on Saturday. The big boys on Sunday.
It’s time to make your allegiances known via wardrobe selections or petty arguments in passing. Although, some of the arguments seem to carry more weight than the adjective of petty.
As we head into the always-anticipated looming football onslaught, it is hard to rationalize summer coming to a close. I will certainly miss the freedom of June, July and early August and I am already looking forward to days at Zephyr Cove next summer. But if we do have to say goodbye to the dog days, as we do every year, knowing my weekends will consist of admiring slapping shoulder pads eases the transition.
It should ease yours too.
So with three days before kickoff Friday night, I have one question for you.
Are you ready?
If not, too bad. It’s here.
