For the first time in years, a team other than Spanish Springs has claimed a High Desert League girls golf tournament.
The Cougars won two-straight state titles before finishing second last fall but are in the midst of a transition period after losing Katrina Prendergast, who won two-straight state individual titles.
The Cougs shot a team score (top five scores) of 376 to finish third in Monday’s tournament at Washoe Golf Course. McQueen turned in a team score of 354 to win the tournament title. Reno (365) was the runner up.
The Lancers were the last team to beat Spanish Springs in an HDL tournament “a few years ago,” Spanish Springs coach Mike Bosco said.
Reed and North Valleys did not have enough golfers to compete in the team competition. Hug does not have a girls golf team.
Jada McAlister fired a 79 to lead Spanish Springs but she was edged out by McQueen’s Alice Duan, who shot a 75, for medalist honors.
Emma Gilmore (85), Grace Bartlett (98), Ciara Hornbarger (114) and Katie Gilbertson (114) made up the rest of Spanish Springs’ score sheet.
For Reed, Katie Fleiner poured in an 88 and Mackenzie Howren turned in a 104.
The High Desert League tournament schedule continues next Tuesday at Hidden Valley Country Club.
