Spanish Springs led McQueen by three strokes after the first day of the girls golf regional tournament but wasn’t able to hold off the Lancers on their home course on Tuesday at Somersett Country Club.
McQueen roared back with a 342 on Tuesday to claim the DI North regional title with a two-day score of 698. Spanish Springs finished with a 377 in the second round to claim second with a cumulative score of 730.
With the second-place finish, the Cougs booked a trip to the state tournament next Wednesday and Thursday at Primm Valley Golf Club in Nipton, Calif.
Spanish Springs’ Jada McAlister shot an 80, one day after turning in an 81 in the first round at Hidden Valley Country Club, to finish third overall (161). She was four strokes better in the tournament that teammate Emma Gilmore (165) who finished fifth overall.
Katie Gilbertson (199), Ciara Hornbarger (205) and Grace Bartlett (217) rounded out the Cougs’ scorecard.
For the Reed, freshman Kaitlin Fleiner finished ninth overall with a two-day score of 174 and earned a spot in next week’s state tournament. She was the only Raider to qualify (top-five finisher on a non-qualifying team).
She was followed by teammates Mackenzie Howren (191), Darby Grow (218) and Rachel Rhoads (244).
Alice Duan of McQueen won the individual regional title with a two-day score of 142—14 strokes better than Reno’s Abbi Fleiner.
