Spanish Springs turned in a team score of 367 on Wednesday at the first round of the girls golf state tournament. The Cougars sit in fifth place at the par-71 Primm Valley Golf Club in Nipton, Calif.
The Cougs trail first-place Coronado by 54 strokes and second-place Bishop Gorman by 44 strokes but have a much easier hill to climb to get into the top four. They sit just one stroke back of McQueen—the DI North champ.
Jada McAlister fired a 7-over-par 78 to lead the Cougars and is tied for sixth overall along with McQueen’s Alice Duan—the DI North individual champ.
McAlister and Duan are four strokes back of overall leader, Annick Haczkiewicz, of Palo Verde.
Emma Gilmore (87), Ciara Hornbarger (95), Grace Bartlett (107) and Katie Gilbertson (111) made up the rest of the Cougs’ scorecard.
Reed freshman Kaitlin Fleiner qualified for the tournament as an individual and is tied for 28th after turning in a 90.
The state tournament concludes on Thursday.
