Sparks United Methodist Church and South Reno United Methodist Church are going Broadway with their full-length production of the musical “Godspell.”
A revival of the musical, based on the Gospel according to St. Matthew, will be performed at the Sparks church at 1231 Pyramid Way on Friday, Jan. 29, Saturday, Jan. 30, and Sunday, Jan. 31. Curtain time is 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, while Sunday’s show begins at 2 p.m.
The south Reno church, 200 DeSpain Lane, will host performances on Feb. 4, Feb. 5, and Feb. 6, beginning at 7:30 p.m. each day.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at either church or online at showtix4u.com. All proceeds benefit worship arts and ministries. For information, call 358-0925.
Cindy Sabatini, the production’s musical director, said the cast consists of 10 community members with a wide range of ages who will be accompanied by professional musicians.
Pastor Gary Pope-Sears from the Sparks church and Pastor Dawn Flower from the south Reno church are among the cast members.
Director Karla Bowman is a retired Methodist pastor with a background in theater. Choreographer Catherine Eardley, a dance instructor at Truckee Meadows Community College, has choreographed many local theater productions.
“The play was written back in 1971, but it’s a timeless message of how the teachings of Jesus build community,” said Sabatini, who has performed in or musically directed numerous shows.
As far as she knows, Sabatini said this is the first time the Sparks church has presented a full-length musical.
