With 2:16 left in Friday night’s DI North semifinal at Spanish Springs, Moses Wood hit a pair of free throws to give Galena a 38-34 lead.
What happened next, the Grizzlies likely won’t soon forget. Unfortunately, for them.
They were outscored 4-0 in down the stretch of regulation (capped with an Asa Carter put back with 10.2 seconds left to force overtime) and 13-0 in overtime, on their way to a 51-38 loss.
Carson improved (23-4) and as well as earning a spot in Saturday’s DI North title game against High Desert League champ, Reno, it also punched a ticket to the state tournament. Additionally, the Senators improved to 18-0 against DI North teams. Galena finished the season 17-11.
Jayden DeJoseph hit a three at the start of the fourth quarter to give Carson a 33-30 edge but Galena grinded out an 8-1 run to take the four-point lead in the final minutes. After Carter tied the game with 10.2 seconds left with his first bucket of the second half, Dillon Voyles had a chance to win the game for the Grizzlies but his deep three came up short.
Carter led Carson with 15 points, including the first five points of overtime. DeJoseph had 13.
Noah Peck led the Grizzlies with 15, 12 of which came from deep. Wood had eight.
Tez Allen’s bucket early in the third quarter gave Carson a 27-19 lead before Galena drew even at 30 with a minute left in the third after Peck’s final three of the night.
Carson and Reno will decide the DI North title on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Spanish Springs.
