The Spanish Springs baseball team boat raced Hug 11-1 at home in five innings on Monday night to move into sole possession of first place in the DI North.
With the win, the Cougs improved to 8-1, 4-0, a half game in front of a number of teams that sit at 3-0 in league play going into Tuesday’s contests. The Hawk dropped to 0-4, 0-4.
The game was originally scheduled to be played at Hug on Tuesday but had to be moved to Spanish Springs on Monday. Because the Cougs hosted the winless Hawks on Saturday, they were the away team on their home field.
Joey Arterburn allowed a lone unearned run on three hits over four innings to pick up the win. He struck out six and didn’t walk a single batter. Trevor French closed it out with a scoreless fifth inning.
Colton Hussey was 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, including a three-run double in the top of the first that highlighted a four-run first.
Josh Prizina gave his batting average a boost, finishing 4-or-4 with a pair of doubles and 2 RBIs.
The Hawks scored their lone, unearned run in the bottom of the second that left them down 5-1.
Jordan Santos plated Colton Forman with an RBI single in the top of the third to push the gap back to five before the Cougs broke it open with three runs in the fourth.
Spanish Springs will look to remain unbeaten in league play on Thursday, when it goes to North Valleys (0-3, 0-3). First pitch is at 3:45 p.m.
