Sparks Police Officer Matt Marquez was presented with the William H. Spurgeon III Award at the Boy Scouts’ Nevada Area Council’s Annual Recognition Dinner, held Friday, March 18, at the Peppermill in Reno. This honor is the highest recognition for individuals contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program.
Marquez has more than 25 years in law enforcement. He started his career as a Tribe Police Officer and learned the value of community policing that has added to his career as a Patrol Officer, Community Oriented Policing Coordinator and Detective.
Marquez is a certified NRA firearms instructor, a NRA Range Master and Certified Instructor for Carry Concealed Weapons Permits. He has a passion for teaching and was instrumental in the formation of the HOG Tactical unit.
The presentation to Marquez was made by Senior Master Sergeant Torry Thompson, military personnel superintendent for the 152nd Force Support Squadron and advisor to the state’s diversity initiative coordinator for the Nevada military for the 152nd Airlift Wing of Nevada Air National Guard in Reno.
