Alejandra Hernandez, a 5th grade Junior Girl Scout from Mammoth Lakes, CA, will sing the national anthem at the opening day of the Great Reno Balloon Race at 6:45 a.m. on September 9, 2016. Hernandez was chosen for the prized spot by winning Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada’s online singing contest. As an avid singer, Hernandez is thrilled to share her voice with her fellow Girl Scouts and the local community.
“I have been singing ever since I could talk. I love singing in the shower and on our microphone at home,” said Hernandez. “What I like to do for fun in Girl Scouts is going to the camps, selling cookies and nuts, and going on trips to earn badges.”
After Hernandez sings the last note of the anthem, the Mass Ascension Balloon Launch and judging competition begins.
“We can’t wait to hear Alejandra’s voice fill the park and show Reno the confidence Girl Scouts gives,” said Pam Czyz, CEO of Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada.
In addition to the national anthem this year, Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada (GSSN) will host their ultimate balloon scavenger hunt adventure on Sunday, September 11 from 5 a.m. to 7 a.m. Girls will meet balloon pilots, help clean the park, and join other Girl Scouts from across their council. Everyone is welcome to join the fun including family, friends, and not-yet Girl Scouts.
The scavenger hunt will start at the green Girl Scout tent, located on the southwest side of the main stage, toward the end/west side of Vendor row. Girls who complete the scavenger hunt will be eligible for a “Great Reno Balloon Race: Girl Scout Day 2016” patch, which is only available for pre-order by contacting the GSSN shop at 775.322.0642 or shop@gssn.org.
All girls in grades K-12 can still join Girl Scouts, making them eligible to earn badges, attend summer camp, join in community Girl Scout events, travel opportunities, and the Cookie Program. Registration information can be found at girlscouts.org/join.
