High school football in Northern Nevada is starting to reveal its true colors.
Spanish Springs scored 19 points in less than six minutes to storm back and beat North Valleys, 38-35, in one of the best finishes in years. Austin Cadenhead recovered an onside kick, then caught the game-winning 38-yard touchdown pass from Korbin Marcum with just 14 seconds left.
Reed’s defense answered some critics with a dominating effort in 28-14 win over Reno. The win all but locked up another league title for the Raiders. They still have to get past McQueen, Hug and Spanish Springs.
In the Sierra League, Douglas mounted a rally late but couldn’t complete the climb, falling 47-42 to Damonte Ranch. The Mustangs have won six straight since dropping their opener.
Damonte now prepares for what will likely amount to the Sierra League title game, Friday night, at home, against Carson. Abel Carter and the Senators have rattled off four straight wins since a 1-2 start.

1. Reed Raiders (6-1)
What defensive issues?
Reed held Brandon Kaho and Reno’s complicated offense to 14 points on Friday night and forced four turnovers that swung the game.
The Raiders have now won 22 straight against 4A North competition and are clearly still the class of Northern Nevada.

2. Reno Huskies (6-1)
Yes, the Huskies lost last week.
But a narrow road loss to the best team in the 4A North doesn’t necessarily warrant a drop in the rankings. Without some awfully timed turnovers, Reno would’ve had a legit shot at knocking off the Raiders.
The defense is still stout and Kaho presents a massive challenge to opposing defenses.

3. Damonte Ranch Mustangs (6-1)
Damonte let its foot off the gas last Friday night and Douglas nearly capitalized. It’s very possible with a sizeable lead late, the Mustangs started looking ahead to the matchup with Carson.
Sophomore Cade McNamara completed 22-of-34 passes for 359 yards and five touchdowns. Cameron Sandoval ran for 193 yards and two touchdowns on just 21 carries.
There are a lot of ways this team can beat you.

4. Carson Senators (5-2)
The Senators maybe started looking ahead to Friday night one week too early as well. Carson wasn’t exactly impressive in a 33-6 win over Bishop Manogue.
Regardless, it sets up a matchup against the Mustangs, who are also unbeaten in league play.
Those who like defense will be encouraged to look away in this one. The scoreboard is going to get a workout.

5. Spanish Springs Cougars (4-2)
Somehow, someway, Spanish Springs found a way to steal a 38-35 win at North Valleys last Friday.
Korbin Marcum threw for 300 plus yards for the second consecutive game.
The Cougars have now won three straight for the first time since 2012. A home win over Hug would give them their first four-game winning streak since 2010.
