The RTC breaks ground today on the 4th Street/Prater Way Bus RAPID Transit Project, which will enhance safety and mobility for everyone. Members of the community will learn more about the project and construction traffic control at an open house on Thursday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Dilworth STEM Academy at 255 E. Prater Way in Sparks. A brief presentation will be held at 5:30 pm.
The project will create wider sidewalks as well as add bike lanes and new landscaping and lighting. Utilities will also be moved underground, removing poles and barriers for disabled individuals in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The final component of the project will be a new RAPID bus line that will begin revenue service in early 2019. Construction of the other elements of the project will be finished in early 2018.
The goals of the project include: connecting Downtown Reno and Downtown Sparks with four new, all-electric buses, supporting economic development and giving everyone improved access to jobs and educational opportunities via transfer to lines serving UNR and TMCC. The new line will be named the RTC LINCOLN LINE in honor of the former Lincoln Highway.
