The Cougars moved to 2-0 in the High Desert League with a 55-14 home win against North Valleys last Friday night. Backed by freshman quarterback Tristan Szabo, Spanish Springs posted its highest point total of the season to stay atop the standings and remain tied for first with Reno.
Szabo was impressive all night, completing 13 of 17 passes for 223 yards and four touchdown passes. Colton Romero was the recipient of two as the junior finished with four catches and led the receivers with 72 yards. Jordan Dudick and Jackson Laduke also caught a touchdown each.
It wasn’t just the passing game that was working, but the ground game was in full effect as well. Senior Gabby Ordaz led the attack with a touchdown and 127 yards on 21 carries, while Brandon Jones ran in a score from seven yards out. Colby Preston made the most of his three touches and punched the ball into the end zone twice from close range.
Defensively, Charles Baugh and Colby Melton notched interceptions while Donte Smith and Hunter Flores both recovered a fumble. Preston, Tanner Bray, Chase Martin and Killian Hurley each recorded a sack.
Spanish Springs (4-3, 2-0) is now set to battle Hug (0-7, 0-2) Friday night before finishing off the year with tough tests against Reno and Reed.
