Coming off its highest point total in school history, Excel Christian traveled to Smith Valley on Saturday and fell to the Bulldogs in a tight game, 28-26. The Warriors scored in each quarter of the conference matchup, but couldn’t hang on to an 18-16 lead after the third quarter.
Much like the previous week, Excel used its ground game to lead the offensive attack. Jeshua Fixel continued his impressive stretch by racking up 170 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Warriors. Junior Jesus Chavez carried the ball just three times but notched 67 yards and a touchdown for the visitors.
The defense was sharp all afternoon too and recorded seven total sacks by four players. Fixel had two of them while also leading his team in tackles with 18. Michael Buis Jr. and Jacob Carerra got to the Bulldogs quarterback twice, while Caleb Howes also earned a sack.
Smith Valley’s running game also shined as they carried the ball 47 times for 325 yards and four touchdowns.
Excel Christian (4-2, 2-3) fell into fifth place in the 1A Northern West standings. They host Mineral County (5-2, 3-2) on Friday at home at 1 p.m. before rounding out the regular season at Pyramid Lake the following week.
