Become a certified lifeguard through the Sparks Parks and Recreation Department’s American Red Cross Lifeguard Training program. A Winter Break session will be held January 2 through 6 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Alf Sorensen Community Center, 1400 Baring Blvd. The cost is $90 ($75 for residents of Sparks).
Lifeguard training candidates must be 15 years or older and pass a swim performance test prior to acceptance into the class, which includes the following prerequisites:
• Brick recovery from deep water.
• Swim 300 yards using Freestyle, Breaststroke or a combination of both.
• Tread water with legs only for 2 minutes.
Students who complete the course will receive an American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate valid for two years.
The registration fee for the training includes instruction, course materials, and an administration fee. Financial assistance is available for youth who cannot otherwise participate in the program due to financial limitations. For more information, call (775) 353-2385 or email recinfo@cityofsparks.us.
