Despite playing on the road against a 4A opponent to open the season, the Railroaders entered Friday night’s game at Douglas confident and ready to battle. Perhaps part of the confidence was due to the fact that they were donning their new uniforms, helmets and shoulder pads for the first time after raising more than $40,000 in the last few months to replace the old equipment that couldn’t safely be used anymore.
And Sparks came out fighting early, but it wasn’t enough in the end as the Tigers came away with a 59-22 win.
The 3A school got on the board first to take an 8-0 lead on a rushing touchdown and ran the ball well all night. They totaled 218 yards on the ground, led by quarterback Tyler Green who finished with 113 yards rushing on 21 carries. Aleki Po’oi also had a big night with a touchdown and 76 yards on the ground.
Green was solid in the air as well, passing for 141 yards and a touchdown to James Renfrow Jr.
However, the night belonged to the team from Gardnerville and their star running back Isaiah John, who ran for four touchdowns on 19 carries and 148 yards. Douglas ended the night with seven rushing touchdowns and 323 total yards on the ground.
The Railroaders (0-1) will regroup and hit the road again on Friday to play their first conference game of the young season at Lowry. The Buckaroos (1-0) are fresh off a thrilling 41-40 win over Pahrump last week. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
