Spanish Springs took care of business on Friday and they relied on their very reliable young quarterback to do so. Sophomore Tristan Szabo threw for 184 yards and four touchdowns and Colby Preston rushed for 97 yards and a score as Spanish Springs knocked off Galena 56-25 in the quarterfinals of the 4A Northern Regional playoffs.
The top-seeded Cougs dominated from the opening kick and led 21-3 after the first quarter and 56-17 at the half before cruising to a win.
The win advances Spanish Springs to the semifinals on Friday where they will host Bishop Manogue after the Miners (9-3, 4-1) beat Reno 55-7 in the first round. The two teams haven’t met yet this season.
On the other side of the bracket, Damonte Ranch ended Reed’s season Friday with a 52-6 win and McQueen defeated Douglas, 55-9. The Mustangs (11-0, 5-0) and the Lancers (10-2, 2-2) haven’t played each other this year either.
Kickoff for both games is set for 7 p.m. The winners of both will play in the Northern title game next Friday night.
