Spanish Springs’ girls basketball team opened the season last week, returning to the floor for the first time since getting upset as the No. 1 seed in February’s regional playoffs.
The Cougs played four games in the High Sierra Winter Challenge on their home floor, and won its first three games before falling on Saturday.
They knocked off Lowry 68-52 on Thursday and won two games on Friday, 59-35 over Fernley and 55-36 against Spring Creek. They nearly finished perfect, but couldn’t overcome an early 21-12 deficit to Churchill County Saturday before losing 48-40.
The girls played Damonte Ranch yesterday and will host Grants Pass, Ore. Friday at 6 p.m.
Reed
It was a tough start to the season for the Reed girls basketball team. The Raiders opened the year at the Nike Central Valley Showdown against some tough competition and came away with an 0-4 record against four California teams.
Reed opened with a 54-47 loss Thursday to Mission Prep before struggling against Clover Prep the next day in a 93-21 loss. The girls closest game came Saturday morning when they fell just four point shy in a 55-51 losing effort to Fresno. A 72-32 loss to Valley Christian later in the day ended the tourney for Reed.
The Raiders return seven seniors from the team that finished 16-8 overall last year and made the playoffs.
They played at Galena yesterday and will host Carson next Tuesday.
