The Spanish Springs softball team came just short of capturing a tournament title after falling in the championship game of the 36th annual Reed High School tournament.
After starting the tournament 4-0, the Cougs fell 11-7 on Saturday to Heritage out of Brentwood, Calif. at Shadow Mountain Sports Complex. Spanish Springs struck for three runs in the first but surrendered six in the second and never led again. Hunter Travers had three hits and three RBIs in the loss while Kilee Pender also finished with three hits.
The Cougs relied on solid pitching and timely hitting earlier in the week when the tournament began. They opened play Friday with a 5-4 win over San Lorenzo Valley (Felton, Calif.) behind six strong innings and 10 strikeouts by Hailey Mclean in the circle. Mclean also had an RBI triple in the contest.
Tyra Clary tossed six innings of two run softball and struck out eight in an 8-2 win over Newark Memorial (Newark, Calif.) later in the day. Kaylah House led the way offensively with a home run and a single with two RBIs.
Clary allowed one hit and struck out eight in the final game of the day Friday in a 10-0 win over Churchill County. Kennedy Dudley had a big game, going 2-for-2 with a home run and four runs knocked in.
The Cougs reached the title game when they scored in the six and seventh innings to knock off Douglas Saturday morning, 4-3. Clary struck out 13 in the game and Hunter Travers finished with a home run and two RBIs.
Spanish Springs (11-3, 3-1) resumes league play this week when they play at Galena Thursday and host Bishop Manogue Saturday.
Reed

The Raiders played six games in their home tournament in two days and finished 2-4.
Reed got off to a slow start Friday and fell to Chico twice, 10-1 and 3-2. They also lost to Antioch, Calif. the same day 4-1 before returning the favor and picking up an 11-3 victory.
Shelby Marquardt was the hitting star for the Raiders in the win after going 2-for-4 with a home run, four RBIs and three runs scored. Emely Gonzalez also picked up a pair of hits and an RBI while Jillian Kyger went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Danyelle Leone earned the win with five innings, one earned run and 10 strikeouts in the circle.
Leone struck out nine the next morning to help the Raiders to a 5-1 win over Las Plumas (Oreville, Calif.).
Reed ended the tournament with an 8-4 loss to Alhambra (Martinez, Calif.) Saturday despite two hits from Ashlan Trevino.
The Raiders (4-11, 1-3) play at Galena today and Wooster Friday.
