The following are highlights from Monday’s Sparks City Council Meeting:
Commendations/ Proclamations
• Sparks City Council proclaimed May 2, 2019 as the National Day of Prayer.
• The council proclaimed May 5-11 as the 50th Anniversary of Municipal Clerks Week to recognize the vital services municipal clerks perform and their exemplary dedication to the communities they represent.
• Council proclaimed the month of May as ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Awareness Month and urged all Sparks citizens to joining the city of Sparks in horning and supporting the ALS Association Nevada Chapter.
• The council proclaimed April 26 as Arbor Day, urging all citizens to celebrate the day and support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands.
• Council proclaimed the month of May as National Bike Month, Bicycle Safety Month and Washoe County Bike Month.
• Council proclaimed the month of May as Older Americans Month, urging residents to take time to acknowledge older adults and the people who serve them as influential and vital to our community.
• The council proclaimed the month of May as One Truckee River Month.
• Council heard a Mayor’s Challenge 2019 presentation from the State of Nevada Department of Veterans Services.
• Council heard an update from the Nevada Department of Transportation about the McCarran Blvd., Greg Street to Probasco Way safety project in the city of Sparks.
• The council was presented the Reno-Tahoe Airport Authority’s annual update.
• Sparks City Council was presented with boards and commissions vacancy announcements for the Arts and Culture Advisory Commission, Technical Review Committee/Washoe County Home Consortium, Civil Service Commission, Parks and Recreation Commission and the Reno Tahoe Airport Authority. General Business
• The council confirmed the Mayor’s appointment of Andrew Ngo to the Sparks Civil Service Commission for a partial term expiring June 30, 2021.
• Council approved the proposed five-year Capital Improvements Plan through fiscal year 2024 and the City Manager’s final budget recommendations for fiscal year 2019-2010.
• Council adopted a resolution to augment the fiscal year 2019 Capital Projects Funds and Enterprise Fund.
• Sparks Council approved an amendment to the Management, Professional and Technical Resolution and the Executive Employee Resolution to coincide with the City Manager’s fiscal year 2020 budget recommendations effective April 22, 2019.
• Council approved an employee agreement for Pete Krall as the city of Sparks new Police Chief, effective June 11, 2019 when current Police Chief Brian Allen retires.
• Council heard first readings for bills concerning wireless communications and sidewalk café regulations in the city of Sparks.
Public Hearings
• Council conducted two public hearings and approved a memorandum of understanding between the city of Sparks and the Sparks Police Protective Association-Lieutenants and Sergeants effective April 29, 2019.
