Federal bill would negate right-to-work laws

March 7, 2020 By Thomas Mitchell Leave a Comment

A month ago the U.S. House passed on a near party line vote of 224-194 a bill dubbed the Protecting the Right to Organize Act, or PRO Act. Among other things the bill would nullify state right-to-work laws, such as Nevada’s 66-year-old right-to-work law and those of 26 other states. Workers would be forced to pay union dues in order to keep their jobs. All three of Nevada’s … [Read more...]

Public worker contracts should be negotiated in the open

July 9, 2019 By Thomas Mitchell Leave a Comment

Despite being duly warned, Nevada’s Democratic lawmakers and Democratic governor this past legislative session lit the fuse on a huge budget bomb — passing and signing into law Senate Bill 135, which gives state public employees the right to collectively bargain for wages and benefits. A study commissioned by the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce estimates this … [Read more...]

Bill would strengthen public records law

March 29, 2019 By Thomas Mitchell Leave a Comment

It is time to put some teeth into Nevada’s public records law. Even though state law requires that all public records and books, except those specifically exempted as confidential by law, must be open for inspection and copying, government agencies have been flouting the law for years, refusing to turn over anything that might prove embarrassing to the agency or its bosses. … [Read more...]

National Popular Vote bill would dilute Nevada vote

February 27, 2019 By Thomas Mitchell 1 Comment

Democratic lawmakers in Carson City are at it again, bound and determined to give your presidential ballots to the voters of California and New York. Two years ago — after Donald Trump won the Electoral College vote by 304 to 227, though Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by 2.9 million individual votes — a bill was introduced that would have had Nevada join in something … [Read more...]

Democrats flunk math with false claims about refunds

February 22, 2019 By Sparks Tribune Leave a Comment

The Associated Press reported recently that Democrats have seized on the fact that the average income tax refund is smaller this year “as proof that the Republican-written tax law hurts the middle class.” Noting the smaller refund checks, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote on her blog, “People have already taken to social media, using the hashtag #GOPTaxScam, to vent their … [Read more...]

Democratic House bill is a naked power grab

February 13, 2019 By Thomas Mitchell 3 Comments

With Democrats firmly ensconced in power in the House of Representatives, the first order of business is, of course, to hold onto that power in perpetuity. The 600-page H.R. 1, dubiously dubbed “For the People Act,” wrests voting law decisions from the states and shreds the First Amendment right of free speech. It is co-sponsored by all three of Nevada’s Democratic … [Read more...]

Efforts to repeal Marsy’s Law need to begin now

February 7, 2019 By Thomas Mitchell Leave a Comment

You can’t say we didn’t warn you. We asked in an editorial published shortly before the November election whether the constitutional amendment on the ballot in Nevada and other states — known as Marsy’s Law and sold as a victim rights measure — could prevent the release of names of crime victims and crime reports that keep the public aware of public safety issues and how … [Read more...]

Universal public service has constitutional flaw

January 31, 2019 By Thomas Mitchell Leave a Comment

For the past year a national commission has been studying the issue of whether all young Americans should be required to perform public service — either military or some form of civilian service — and whether women should be required to register for the draft as men are currently required to do, even though the draft has not been used since 1973. The National Commission on … [Read more...]
