RENO—And then the High Desert League was Reno’s to lose. The Spanish Springs boys went to Reno on Friday night with the chance to move into first place. Instead, the Cougs tumbled all the way to third in the HDL with a 61-56 road loss. The Cougars, who saw a three-game winning streak come to a close, fell to 9-7, 5-3 in the DI North—two games back of Reno and one game … [Read more...]
Boys hoops: McQueen’s size too much for Reed
RENO—There’s a reason many thought McQueen could be a DI North title contender this winter. And the Lancers further validated that belief on Tuesday night as they rolled to a 70-48 home win over Reed. Led by 6-10 center Octavian Corley, McQueen’s interior defense was too much for the undersized Raiders. “Their size killed us,” Reed coach Zach Sanford said. “They’re … [Read more...]
Boys hoops: All three local squads victorious
RENO—Galena’s defensive game plan was obvious: Don’t let Marcus Loadholt beat them. And he didn’t. The Grizzlies held arguably the best player in Northern Nevada to eight points in Friday’s DI North contest at Galena. Unfortunately for the Grizzlies, the Cougars are well-rounded. The rest of Spanish Springs’ roster picked up the slack and the Cougars pulled out a big … [Read more...]
Boys hoops: Reed’s upset bid falls short at Galena
The Reed boys gave Galena, the defending DI North champs, a scare Tuesday night on the road but never made the second-half run it needed in a 50-39 loss. The Raiders dropped to 4-9, 1-4 in the DI North while the Grizzlies improved to 9-6, 3-2. Reed first-year coach Zach Sanford wouldn’t call the gritty effort a moral victory, but did say there were positives to draw … [Read more...]
Tuesday boys hoops roundup: Local squads go 2-1
The point of traveling early in the season is to play against competition you won’t see in the regular season, to expose weaknesses against unfamiliar foes. Unfortunately for Spanish Springs, the Cougs traveled all the way to San Diego to play in the Torrey Pines Classic by Under Armor and got stuck playing against High Desert League rival McQueen on Tuesday night. They … [Read more...]
Spanish Springs boys roll, girls let early lead slip
Last week was a rough one for the Cougs. They lost three-straight home games, two of which were technically league contests. It’s fair to say after Friday night’s 72-42 rout at Damonte Ranch, they’ve moved on. “That was in the past. We’re living right here in the present,” Spanish Springs coach Kyle Penney said. “We still have to get better. We can’t be happy with … [Read more...]
Cougs push No. 21 team in the country
Spanish Springs boys basketball coach Kyle Penney said he wasn’t sure what he got his team into when he scheduled Moreau Catholic. The private school located outside of Oakland is ranked No. 21 in the nation. What he got his team into, was a potential confidence boost after two tough DI North losses to Bishop Manogue and Carson on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. … [Read more...]
Carson hands Spanish Springs second loss in three days
After just three DI North contests, the Spanish Springs boys find themselves in a hole. The Cougars fell to 3-3, 1-2 in the DI North with a 60-49 home loss to Carson on Thursday night. The Senators, who won the Sierra League last season, improved to 3-3, 1-0, in the battle of last year’s league champs. “Winning is hard. Not everybody can do it,” Spanish Springs coach … [Read more...]
