The Railroaders opened their season Thursday afternoon with a 1-1 tie at Wooster.
The Colts’ Vanessa Saldana scored the first game goal in the 32nd minute. The Railroaders’ Angelica Hurtado tied the game four minutes later. The score held until the final whistle.
“This game was not what we expected,” Wooster coach Rene Flores said. “We were tough on each other today. We needed this tie because we want to finish top two, not top four. No matter who we play, it’s going to be a fight.”
Sparks coach Art Hurtado said he was pleased with his group’s effort and thought first-game jitters may have played a role in finding the net just once.
“We played really well—we are on target with what we want to work on,” Hurtado said. “We wanted more goals, of course, but the wind doesn’t help. The girls were full of adrenaline.”
Sparks opens DI-A North play next Wednesday at home against Truckee.
