One week down. A few months to go.
The first week of the high school football season is in the books and we see a bit of shuffling in this week’s power rankings but after Reed’s 44-27 beat down of Carson on Saturday, the top remains familiar.
1. Reed Raiders (1-0)
It’s going to be tough to get the Raiders out of this spot. Reed put the hurt on No. 2 Carson Saturday night at Mackay Stadium. Although, they looked more worldly in the second half.
Next game: Friday at No. 3 Damonte Ranch 7 p.m.
Last week: 1
2. Carson Senators (0-1)
The first half against Reed was brutal but the Senators looked like the defending Sierra League champs they are in the second half, outscoring the Raiders 21-3. Quarterback Joe Nelson is dangerous.
Next game: Friday at No. 5 McQueen 7 p.m.
Last week: 2
3. Damonte Ranch (1-0)
The Mustangs looked shaky early at Spanish Springs on Friday but absolutely wore down the Cougs’ defense on their way to a 42-7 rout. Freshman quarterback Cade McNamara is still fighting for the starting job but he’s going to cause a lot of problems for a lot of defenses in the years to come—maybe even this year.
Next game: Friday vs. No. 1 Reed 7 p.m.
Last week: 4
4. Reno Huskies (0-1)
Other than Bishop Manogue traveling to Boise to play Bishop Kelley, the Huskies had the toughest game of the week, traveling to south Sacramento to play Elk Grove, where they were thumped 38-7. It’s tough to hold that outcome against them.
Next game: Friday at Galena 7 p.m.
Last week: 3
5. McQueen Lancers (1-0)
The Lancers didn’t wow anyone with their 33-18 win at Douglas on Friday but they did pull away late on the road when they needed to.
Next game: Friday vs. No. 2 Carson 7 p.m.
Last week: 5
