Week 3 DI North Power Rankings

September 11, 2015 By Nathan Shoup Leave a Comment

Tribune photo by John Byrne – Freshman quarterback Cade McNamara and Damonte’s offense proved they are a group to watch following last Friday’s high-scoring loss to Reed. The Mustangs remained No. 3 this week, behind Reed and Carson.

Two weeks into the prep football season, team’s identities are starting to be determined.

Reed has now played the No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the rankings and enters the third week of the season undefeated. The No. 3 Mustangs, however, showed last Friday night their offense is good enough to make them a legit DI North title contender.

1. Reed Raiders (2-0)

Reed’s offense is ridiculous. It will be a victory just for DI North defense to keep the unit under 40 points. Reed’s defense has shown signs of vulnerability but it’s nothing the offense hasn’t been able to pick up the slack for.

Next game: Friday vs. Galena

Last week: 1

2. Carson Senators (1-1)

Any concerns after the season-opening loss to Reed were likely put to rest with Friday’s 59-14 whooping at McQueen.

Next game: Friday vs. North Valleys

Last week: 2

3. Damonte Ranch (1-1)

The Mustangs’ offense is legit. Running backs Sam Banghart and Cameron Sandoval are DI North Offensive Player of the Year candidates and freshman quarterback Cade McNamara shredded Reed’s defense for the majority of last Friday night’s offensive tug-of-war. Damonte’s defense is far behind its offense but it will likely need to force just a handful of stops each night to win.

Next game: Friday @ Placer (Calif.)

Last week: 3

4. Reno Huskies (1-1)

As presumed, the Huskies bounced back on Friday with a 9-0 win over Galena, but it was hardly dominating. Reno’s defense will be tough to move the ball against this year but the offense has now scored just 16 points in two games this year. That’s not very many.

Next game: Friday vs. Douglas

Last week: 4

5. McQueen Lancers (1-0)

A 59-14 loss at home doesn’t look good but take the opponent (Carson) into consideration. The Senators moved the ball at will, especially early, while the Lancers mustered just two second-quarter touchdowns. The lopsided loss will be an anomaly.

Next game: BYE

Last week: 5
