THE GREAT RENO BALLOON RACE once again showed its ability to attract a crowd, despite gusty winds on Sunday and wasps on Friday. Event organizers say the largest crowd came on Saturday, when an estimated 60,000 spectators gathered at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. On Sunday, about half the hot-air balloons remain grounded because it was too windy.
Wasps caused a small disturbance on Friday when they stung a group of spectators, including kindergarten students and their parents, in a corner of the pasture at the park. They were treated for minor stings at the scene.
This year’s event featured 90 balloons, including Darth Vader and 16 others with special shapes.
