A passenger was killed early Sunday morning when a tractor-trailer overturned on Interstate 80 east of Sparks, spilling its cargo and blocking eastbound traffic, the Nevada Highway Patrol reported.
A preliminary investigation showed that the driver, for unknown reasons, allowed the tractor-trailer to drift into the right shoulder and then overcorrected, causing the semi-truck and trailer, to overturn and land sideways, the Highway Patrol said. The accident occurred while the tractor-trailer was traveling east on the interstate, west of Wadsworth.
The male passenger, who was in the truck’s sleeper berth, was ejected and died at the scene, the Highway Patrol said. He was not identified. The driver was taken to a Reno hospital for injuries that were not life threatening.
The Highway Patrol said guardrails on both sides of the eastbound lanes sustained major damage.
