The Cougars moved into the High Desert League driver’s seat, although early, with a 3-2 road win over Reno Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, Spanish Springs, which entered the day tied for first with Reed, improved to 8-3-0, 5-3-0 in the DI North. Reno, which sits in third place in the HDL, dropped to 6-6-1, 3-4-1.
After allowing a goal 13 minutes into the second half that split Spanish Springs’ 2-0 advantage, Kendall Kingery provided an insurance tally minutes later. It proved to be the game winner.
The Huskies again snuck within a goal, in the 61st minute, but couldn’t draw even.
Allie Lepori scored a breakaway goal in the 24th minute and Makayla Long hit nylon from 20 yards out in the 38th minute to spot the Cougs a 2-0 lead at the break.
The Cougars will look to build their first-place cushion on Saturday at McQueen.

The Raiders (5-3-0, 5-3-0) scored four second-half goals Tuesday night at Hug in a 5-0 win.
Hannah Anderson scored the only first-half goal in the 37th minute. After fixing some things at halftime, the team finished more opportunities in the second half. Tayler Anderson had two goals in the 59th and 64th minutes, Erika Robtoy had one in the 61st, and Ali Miller had the final goal in the 75th.
“We had no possession and tried to dribble through three people when we should have passed,” Reed coach Jason Saville said about the first half. “We were getting pushed around in the first half so we (the coaches) just told them they had to play more physical and that we needed to possess the ball more. We have some physical games coming up.”
With the win over Hug, Reed remained tied for first place in the High Desert League with rival Spanish Springs. The teams will play each other the first time Oct. 10 at Reed.
“Every game counts. We have a lot of work to do Thursday and Friday to get ready for North Valleys and then we have a big week next week,” Saville said.
Reed will travel to North Valleys on Saturday and then Reno next Tuesday before taking on the Cougars.
