Week 7 DI North Power Rankings

Tribune photo by John Byrne – Reed senior offensive/defensive lineman Nick Gregg (No. 55) and the Raiders rolled No. 3 Reno 27-11 in the mud last week to once again defend their No. 1 ranking.

Another week in the books. Another week of clarifying the muddied water that is DI North football.

If there was much a question before last week, Reed and Carson once again proved they are the teams to beat in the High Desert and Sierra Leagues with impressive wins. So naturally, they remained 1-2 in this week’s rankings.

Damonte Ranch drops to its lowest ranking of the season after another lackluster offensive showing, although, it was against a stout Carson defense.

1. Reed Raiders (6-0)

Reed has shown it can do it on dry conditions, beating Carson and Damonte Ranch on turf. Last week, it showed it can do it in brutal elements, muscling its way to a commanding 27-11 win over Reno in a mud pit. The Raiders have played one of the toughest schedules so far, along with Damonte, and remain unscathed. The defense played its best game of the season. A 10-0 regular season now appears likely.

Next game: Friday at North Valleys

Last week: 1

2. Carson Senators (5-1)

The Senators grinded out their most impressive victory of the season last Friday, edging Damonte Ranch 17-14 at home. Carson proved its four-game winning streak wasn’t just the result of a weak strength of schedule. With the Sierra League title imminent after the win, the writing is on the wall for a third-straight Carson-Reed DI North title game.

Next game: Friday at Bishop Manogue

Last week: 2

3. Reno Huskies (4-2)

The Huskies did what they could to slow down Reed’s offense last week, melting the clock with the run game. They held the Raiders to a season-low 27 points but got an assist from the mud. The better team won but that was the toughest test the Raiders have gotten from a DI North team this year—including Carson. Reno’s offense continues to be a question mark.

Next game: Friday at Hug

Last week: 3

4. Galena Grizzlies (3-2)

The Grizzlies were idle last week so they didn’t play their way up to the No. 4 spot, their highest ranking of the year, as much as Damonte played its way out of the spot. Galena has a good chance to stretch its winning streak to three games Friday at Douglas, which picked up its first win of the season last week against Bishop Manogue.

Next game: Friday vs. Douglas

Last week: 5

5. Damonte Ranch (2-4)

For the second time in three weeks, Damonte’s high-powered offense was held to two touchdowns in a narrow loss, this a 17-14 defeat at Carson last Friday. The Mustangs’ defense was up to the challenge but that unit is not the team’s strength. Damonte has played arguably the toughest schedule in the DI North this year but with just two wins, it drops to its lowest ranking of the season. The Mustangs have lost four of their last five.

Next game: Friday vs. Cathedral Catholic (San Diego, Calif.)

Last week: 4
