The Sparks Heritage Museum is inviting people to join renowned local historian and storyteller Fred Horlacher for the Donner Party bus tour on Saturday, Oct. 17.
A lecture on the first half of the Donner Party trek will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the museum.
Horlacher is a retired Nevada history teacher whose career is filled with accolades, including the prestigious Milliken Outstanding Teacher Award and both Washoe County’s and Nevada’s Teacher of the Year Awards. His vivid storytelling brings history alive for people of all ages, and his bus tours provide an unusual experience for history lovers.
The Donner Party tour includes stops at historically significant sites, including Fernley, Wadsworth, Rattlesnake Mountain, Mayberry Foot Bridge, Verdi, Donner State Park and Donner Lake Overview. The bus will leave from the parking lot behind the museum at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to return at 5 p.m. The itinerary is subject to change due to weather or time constraints.
Tickets cost $65 for museum members and $75 for non-members. Tickets include Friday’s lecture, a morning and afternoon snack, and bottled water. Bring a sack lunch to enjoy during the tour. Tickets for Friday’s lecture only cost $10.
