While the Obama administration was caught by surprise as Vladimir Putin swung into cold war time mode in Syria, they (members of the Obama administration) should have had an inkling of what might happen following Putin’s very descriptive speech at the United Nations. In that talk Putin blamed Western influence for the chaos in the Mideast. He said that removing stable governments with no plan for the future had been a disaster. In effect, he was giving a signal that he would support Premier Bashar Assad over the rebels, whom the U.S. has been supporting.
A scant 24 hours later, his representative called on our leaders in the area to inform them that Russia would begin bombing within the hour and that U.S. planes should depart Syrian airspace.
In response, the U.S. State Department and Department of Defense said that they would immediately begin “deconfliction” talks with the Russians, another example of the way the Obama administration uses words against its opponents’ gunfire.
Obama’s premier prevaricator, NSA Director Susan Rice, uttered another of her nonsensical statements when she said that everyone in the White House was “perplexed” about Russia’s actions. In his first public comments on the situation, the president said Putin was acting out of a position of weakness. Obama’s remarks were quickly seconded by Secretary of Defense Ash Carter, who stated that Russia would be bogged down in a morass. Apparently these two gentlemen who represent our ability to defend the U.S. are more adept at reading Putin’s mind than they are in developing a strategy to defeat our enemies.
What we have now is an axis of evil between Russia, Iran and Syria that is reminiscent of the infamous Germany, Italy, Japan axis of the last century.
While Putin began his incursion in Syria with war planes, he has quickly escalated it by putting troops and armament on the ground and firing Cruise-type missiles from his battleships over 1,000 miles away. This tactic may have repercussions because it was reported last week that two of these missiles had gone astray and landed in Iran. While Putin’s cover story is that the reason he is in Syria is to cooperate with the U.S. in defeating ISIS, it is worth noting that the majority of his airstrikes and shelling have been directed against U.S.-backed rebel forces.
On the domestic front, our president came out and firmly stated he was using the Oregon shooting as a way to politicize a call for more stringent gun laws. He was scheduled to make a trip last Friday to the site of the tragic incident, despite the fact that a majority of the local population was adamantly against him making an appearance. While the president abhorred the slaying of the nine victims, he has yet to mention the fact that the city of Chicago, which has the most stringent gun laws, saw more than 300 shootings in the month of September alone.
During his entire presidency Obama seems to have been fixated on converting America to The Land of the Lotus Eaters.
