Week 9 DI North Power Rankings

October 23, 2015 By Nathan Shoup Leave a Comment

Tribune file photo by John Byrne – Reed senior quarterback Matt Denn and the Raiders are once again atop the Power Rankings entering Week 9. The Raiders have outscored their last four opponents, 129-52.

Remember what we said about the power divide that exists in DI North football? Well, it was glaringly obvious again last week.

Of the five DI North games last Friday, none were separated by fewer than 30 points. This came one week after Reno’s 23-0 win over Hug was the closest contest of Week 7.

The Reed-McQueen game steals the spotlight this week. It is the only top-five matchup and it could very likely settle the High Desert League title.

To view how the Power Rankings have adjusted over the course of the season, click here.

1. Reed Raiders (8-0)

The Raiders have scored at least 64 points in three of the last four weeks. That’s a lot of points.

Next game: Friday vs. No. 4 McQueen

Last week: 1

2. Carson Senators (7-1)

Message received: Carson is the best team in the Sierra League. Galena was the biggest test remaining on the Senator’s regular-season schedule and they rolled the Grizzlies 51-21.

Next game: Idle

Last week: 2

3. Reno Huskies (6-2)

The Huskies’ offense was sluggish two weeks ago but returned to form last Friday night, hanging 44 points on Spanish Springs. Reno’s defense has surrendered more than two touchdowns just twice this year.

Next game: Friday vs. North Valleys

Last week: 4

4. McQueen Lancers (5-2)

The Lancers were unimpressive offensively through the first half of the season but have scored 160 points the last three weeks. Quarterback Joey Cox has the unit moving the ball at will. At 3-0 in HDL play, McQueen can put itself in a good position to win a league title on Friday night at undefeated Reed. Should be easy right?

Next game: Friday at No. 1 Reed

Last week: 5

5. Galena Grizzlies (4-3)

The Grizzlies had a nightmare of a time trying to stop Carson last week (they’re hardly the first team to struggle) in a 51-21 road loss. It was the first time in a month Galena allowed more than 17 points in a contest. After going to Bishop Manogue on Friday, Galena could have the chance to earn the Sierra League No. 2 seed, and a home playoff game, with a win over Damonte Ranch in the regular-season finale.

Next game: Friday at Bishop Manogue

Last week: 3
