Twenty-two Rail City boys soccer players were recognized when the DI and DI-A North all-league teams were released last weekend.
Sparks led the way with 10 selections after winning the DI-A North regular and postseason title. The Railroaders finished the season 18-2-4, one win shy of a berth in the state title game.
“Obviously, it was all a team effort,” Sparks coach Frank Avilla said. “It always feels good to be recognized the way we did.”
Junior forwards Genaro Vazquez and Alexis Medina were first-team selections, along with freshman forward Eric Vazquez and sophomore forward Bryan Munoz.
Genaro Vazquez led the team with 21 goals to go along with six assists. Alexis Medina led the team with 11 assists and 66 steals in addition to four goals. Eric Vazquez wasn’t far behind in the steal category, finishing with 58. He also passed out four assists.
Munoz’s nine goals were the second-highest total on the team.
Freshman defender Rene Perez was the lone second-team selection.
Another freshman defender, Alex Cabrera, received honorable mention, along with junior defender Omar Vasquez, junior keeper Jose Cerritos, senior defender Kristian Origel and junior utility player Mathew Garcia.
Spanish Springs
The Cougars finished 5-7-5 this year, good for third in the High Desert League before falling in the regional quarterfinals, 2-1, at Carson in overtime. The Senators went on to win the state title.
Seven different Cougs received postseason accolades.
Forward Court Diesner landed on the first team along with defender Jose Estrada.
Forward Anibel Gonzales, midfielder Daniel Vazquez and keeper Zach Bower were second-team selections.
Midfielder David Trujillo and defender Kyle Georgeson received honorable mention.
All seven selections are juniors.
Reed
The Raiders missed out on the playoffs after finishing in fifth place in the HDL at 3-9-3 but still put five players on all-league squads.
Junior forward Dayton Farrow and senior midfielder Alex Reyes received first-team accolades. Senior midfielder Walter Ordonez and senior defender Alex Origel were second-team selections.
Senior defender Alex Martinez was named to the honorable mention squad.
