The Bishop Manogue Girls put a stamp on their semifinal contest against Douglas on Thursday at Spanish Springs, winning 75-32, but the road to victory was not as easy as the score suggests.
Both teams were aggressive on defense to start out the game. Each team had only two points midway through the first quarter. Douglas finished the quarter on a high note with senior guard Maddy Lowe’s three pointer in the final seconds.
Manogue and Douglas went back and forth in the second quarter, each team taking turns with the lead. The Miners finished the half up 29-23 by going on a 8-2 in the final 2:03.
“I’m glad we got our worst half of the season out of the way,” Bishop Manogue coach Carlnel Wiley said the first half. “I told my girls to have a short term memory. We needed to forget that half.”
Manogue did just that. Douglas was caught off guard by the Miners defensive pressure to start the half. Douglas coach Werner Christen called three timeouts in the first six minutes of the quarter, but Manogue’s pace couldn’t be matched by Douglas. The Miners exploded to go up 57-30 after three quarters.
A running clock was implemented with 6:00 left in the fourth quarter. The Miners cruised to a win with each player scoring a basket. Manogue junior Malia Holt had a game high 24 points.
The Miners will take on Reno on Saturday at 5:15 for the DI North title at Spanish Springs. It is the third straight year the two will see each other in the championship game. Both are advancing to state regardless of the outcome.
“Reno is going to come at us and we’re going to come at them,” Wiley said. “Hopefully our shots fall and we can come out on top.”

The Reno girls overpowered Damonte Ranch, 68-27, in Thursday’s DI North semifinal at Spanish Springs.
The Huskies started the game in full court pressure and didn’t let up the entire game. Reno’s Mallory McGwire dropped eight in the first quarter, putting the team up 25-2 after just eight minutes.
The Huskies continued to force turnovers in the second quarter as McGwire scored another eight in the period. Reno lead 49-10 going into the second half
“We pressed well early on,” Reno coach Shane Foster said. “I think we had 26 turnovers in the first half, and we got a lot of easy buckets and three point attempts.”
The Mustangs showed pride in the third quarter, going on a 9-2 at the start of the period, but the Huskies eventually found their groove to finish the quarter up 63-21.
There was a running clock in the fourth quarter. Reno coasted to a 68-27 victory. McGwire led all scorers with 16.
“We’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing,” Foster said.
