The First Tee of Northern Nevada begins its 2016 season with a special registration event March 19-20 in the golf department at Scheels in The Outlets at Sparks mall.
Registration is open to youth ages 5 to 18; hours are 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
By signing up early, registrants will save on programming, including season passes. Scheels will offer discounts on golf equipment, free Ferris Wheel rides and other prizes.
“This is the perfect opportunity for local youth to join The First Tee family, have some fun and save their parents some money in the process,” says Chris Dewar, The First Tee of Northern Nevada’s executive director and LPGA Professional. “We’re excited to have Scheels on board as a partner for this event and look forward to our biggest season yet.
The First Tee’s series of golf and life skills classes are held at six Reno-Sparks golf courses from March 28 through Oct. 29. Classes range from beginner, intermediate and advanced four-day “camps” to weekend or weekday Tiny Tees, Par, Birdie, Eagle, PLAYer I, PLAYer II, Teen, Parent/Child and Tournament Prep classes taught by certified PGA and LPGA professionals along with volunteers who have completed an official training course. Most classes run for about six weeks, one to two nights per week, and transportation to each site is available.
Last year nearly 1,500 Reno-Sparks kids took part in The First Tee’s golf course-based classes. Several thousand more were introduced to the program through demonstrations at Washoe County schools, the Boys & Girls Club and other organizations.
Founded in 1997 by the LGPA, Masters Tournament, PGA of America, PGA TOUR and USGA, The First Tee has grown into one of the game’s top service organizations with over 187 local chapters nationwide. The Northern Nevada Youth Golf Foundation was established in 1998 as a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, and in August 2005, The First Tee of Northern Nevada was chartered as an official Chapter of The First Tee. Its vision is to instill in young people, through the game of golf, The Nine Core Values — Honesty, Integrity, Sportsmanship, Respect, Confidence, Responsibility, Perseverance, Courtesy and Judgment — through which they can achieve their dreams, thrive socially, excel academically and athletically, and become successful adults with integrity, strong family values, and a commitment to the community.
