On Monday, March 21 the Nevada Department of Transportation will begin a project to reconstruct Nugget Avenue between Pyramid Way and McCarran Boulevard. The project is expected to continue through early summer.
The approximately one-mile section of roadway east of the Nugget Casino Resort will be completely reconstructed and repaved, with 16 inches of old roadbed pulverized. Some of the old roadbed material will then be recycled, mixed with cement and incorporated into the new road. Six inches of new asphalt will top the roadbed, providing a sturdy and durable roadway surface, particularly important for the heavy truck traffic traveling on the frontage road. Roadway curb and gutters will also be replaced.
Nugget Avenue between Pyramid Way and McCarran Boulevard will be reduced to one lane, one way during construction. Business access will always be available. Eastbound travel on Nugget Avenue will be closed for the duration of the project while westbound travel will remain open. Motorists can access Nugget Avenue at the I-80 East McCarran exit 19 and travel westbound to their destination. Lane closures are scheduled to last through the end of spring.
Granite Construction earned the bid on the $800,000 project. This section of Nugget Avenue, built in 1963, was last fully repaved in the 1970s and resurfaced again in the mid-1990s.
