After hearing extensive comment from the community at a special public meeting last night, the Washoe County School District Board of Trustees unanimously selected Diane Nicolet, Ph.D. to serve out the remainder of the term of former Trustee Dr. Barbara McLaury.
Nicolet will represent District G until a candidate is selected by the voters in November to serve a four-year term on the Board of Trustees.
“I am very honored,” Nicolet said. “I look forward to the work and to serving our community.”
“We had so many outstanding candidates to choose from, and we are grateful to everyone who devoted time and energy to participating in this process,” said Board President Angie Taylor. “We were encouraged by the great public outpouring of support as we went through this process together with the community. All of us on the Board considered this a high priority—to find the very best person to succeed Dr. McLaury—and after hearing public input and discussing this among ourselves during these public meetings, we came to a unanimous decision. We look forward to working with Dr. Nicolet, and we welcome her to the team.”
Nicolet is the director of the E.L. Cord Child Care Center for Truckee Meadows Community College. She has also taught education courses at the University of Nevada, Reno and Truckee Meadows Community College, and served on numerous community boards and committees. She will represent District G, which is an at-large position that essentially covers the west side of Washoe County.
At a public meeting on March 9, the Board of Trustees took comments from the public before narrowing the initial field of 11 candidates to five: William (Bill) Horn; Carlos Ledon; Gary MacDonald; Dr. Diane Nicolet; and Katy Simon Holland.
Nicolet will succeed McLaury, who resigned her seat on the Board due to health issues earlier this year.
She will be sworn in during a ceremony at the next regularly scheduled meeting of the Board of Trustees on Tuesday, April 5.
