The Spanish Springs volleyball team enters this year with lofty expectations.
And after an entire offseason of volleyball, the senior-laden squad was ready to see a different-colored jersey on the other side of the net. So coach Frank Sandomenico signed his team up to play the first day the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association allowed, Friday, in the 13th Annual Yerington Memorial Tournament. The field is 24 deep.
The Cougars had no problem beating Wells (25-12, 25-9), Silver Stage (25-13, 25-8) and South Tahoe (25-10, 25-17). All matches are best-of-three.
Spanish Springs will play Calvary Chapel at 11 a.m. on Saturday, followed by a meeting with Fernley. The outcome of those contests will determine if the Cougars will advance to the gold bracket to play for the tournament title.
